Living the Story Devotional Series: Call

Living the Story is a midweek devotional aimed to inspire and encourage you to place your life in the gospel story that continues to live and breathe each new day. This week we covered “Call.” Click “download” below for a pdf version of this devotional.

A Prayer – Petition

Prayers of Petition are requests to God…yes for our wishes, but our wishes are conditional on the will of the Father as He cannot act outside of His will. You can think of your Petition Prayers in 3 ways: first, that your life would mirror a life in Jesus. You can focus on faithfulness, stewardship on all that God has given, personal healing and growth, or an increased presence of the Spirit. Second, pray over your schedule for the day with all of its joys and challenges. Third, bring any special requests before God. He hears our prayers!

Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.

John 14:12-14

Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:5-7

A Virtue – Courage

Living into God’s call is not going to be easy. Each of us will likely face challenges, daily even, that will require courage. Our courage is not manufactured as “mind over matter,” but rather is driven by the important truth that God is with us. In what ways is God calling you to take up courage?

do not fear, for I am with you,

    do not be afraid, for I am your God;

I will strengthen you, I will help you,

I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.

Isaiah 41:10

I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world!”

John 16:33

An Action – Spiritual Gifts

God has equipped us for the tasks before us. But our gifts need to be discovered, developed, and deployed. Where do we start understanding our spiritual gifts? The first step is to contact a pastor, who can resource you with some helpful surveys and tools for spiritual gift discovery.

We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us…

Romans 12:6

He who descended is the same one who ascended far above all the heavens, so that he might fill all things.) The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ.

Ephesians 4:10-13

Kids Corner!

  • Read John 14:6 with your family
  • Create a treasure map for your kids to find a hidden snack in your house.  Have them follow the map to the “treasure.”
  • Discuss: In the Bible verse, what is the treasure? (Heaven) What is the “map”?  (God’s will/call).
